Details Itinerary
Day 1: Trek from Dingboche to Island Peak Base Camp
Trek distance: approx. 9.6 km
Trek duration: 6 - 7 hours
Maximum altitude: 5,087 m
After getting the day started with some nice breakfast and tea, we’ll head for the trek to Island Peak Base Camp. The trail starts with a steep ascent above Imja Valley, which provides a fabulous view of Lhotse and Tawache. The paths are narrow and graveled with dirt, making the trek somewhat difficult.
It takes a continuous 6-7 hours of walk to reach the Island Peak base camp and once we’ve got there, you’ll get to relish the jaw-dropping scenery. We’ll end the day with beautiful sightseeing of Island Peak and its nearby mountains and glaciers. Overnight stay in a tent.
Day 2: Acclimatization and Exploration
Climbing the Island Peak in haste without proper acclimatization can have great risks. So instead of ascending the mountain, we’ll stay at the base camp for one day and let our bodies have enough rest. In the day, we’ll explore Imja Tsho, a glacial lake held by a terminal moraine. The scenes from the lake with surrounding mountains and glaciers are quite astonishing. After the sightseeing, we’ll descend the trail back to base camp and spend the night here.
Day 3: Trek to Island Peak High Camp
Hike duration: 4 to 5 hours
Maximum altitude: 5,600 m
The trek from Island Peak Base Camp to High Camp typically takes about 3 to 4 hours. This can vary depending on your pace, weather conditions, and acclimatization. The trail involves a steep ascent with some technical sections, so it's important to take it slow and steady to avoid altitude sickness and fatigue.
Trekking from Island Peak Base Camp to High Camp is a challenging but rewarding ascent. The route involves a steep climb through rocky and icy terrain, requiring a good level of fitness and mountaineering skills. The trail traverses a glacier, with sections that may involve scrambling over boulders and navigating crevasses. The high altitude adds to the difficulty, so acclimatization and proper gear are essential. Once at High Camp, climbers typically rest and prepare for the final push to the summit of Island Peak, where they can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Everest region.
Day 4: Summit Day Island Peak, back to Base Camp/Chukkung/Dingboche
Trek distance: approx. 2 - 3 km
Trek duration: 3 to 4 hours
Maximum altitude: 6,189 m
If yesterday’s trek was challenging, today’s even more vicious, so we better start early and reach the summit on time. We’ll start climbing the Island Peak trail at the crack of dawn as its journey is quite difficult and requires a lot of time. The trail to Island Peak is jagged with rocky steps and an open gully.
Getting to the top requires us to ascend the ice slopes and mountain ridges, which are quite exhausting. After a tough walk of 3-4 hours, we’ll reach the summit and enjoy the stunning view it has to offer.
We’ll be able to see the beautiful landscapes, glistening mountains, ice slopes from the top. After summiting the snow peak and watching the magnificent view, we’ll descend the trail back to Island Peak Base Camp. Overnight stay in the tent.
Day 5: Trek down from Island Peak Base Camp to Pangboche
Trek distance: 14.5 km
Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours
Maximum altitude: 3,985 m
After breakfast, we will set out on a journey to Pangboche, beginning with a gentle descent along the trail. As we exit the village, the path will lead us past the ancient monastery and impressive hills, providing breathtaking views. Throughout our trek, you'll be treated to stunning vistas of shimmering mountains and glaciers.
Since the trek to Pangboche is primarily downhill, we will reach the settlement in a relatively short time. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy close-up views of Ama Dablam and the surrounding lush green forests. After some time to take in the scenery, we will head to the teahouse to conclude our day.
Alternatively, you can opt to fly by helicopter to Lukla on a shared basis with your team. This option provides a quick and scenic return, allowing you to bypass the trek and enjoy stunning aerial views of the region.
Please note that this is the only guideline and outline program from day-by-day itinerary. There can be a lot of changes in those dates as per the weather and mountain conditions as well as personal health condition.
